Dabney, charged with importing 103 natives of Africa for slaves into the United States on the schooner Clotilde--28 men and 25 women, 25 boys and 25 girls--was dismissed out of court because of the war coming on, the court itself being outside the jurisdiction of the United States. W. G. Jones was judge; R. B. Owen, clerk of the court, A. J. Requier, the poet, district attorney, and C. M. Godbold, marshal: and this was the flat ending of the very lively romance that was [...] going when Captain Tim Meaher in 1859 disputed the statement of certain of his northern passengers aboard his steamboat, the Roger B. Taney, that it still was possible to import negroes from Africa in face of all that the United States and Great Britain could do to prevent it [...] hundred thousand dollars [Craighead 357-358].
